Have you heard of social businesses before? They are the ones who trade to make the world a better place, by intentionally tackling social problems and/or helping the environment.
In Australia, we have an estimated 20,000 social enterprises that are operating across all industry sectors. Three-quarters of them are small businesses.
With many of them here in Perth, it's about time we take a closer look at some of them.
As a social enterprise cafe in the heart of Northbridge, Gather supports and reinvests back into multiple local rehabilitation programs. They also offer a seasonal menu that is inspired by fresh market ingredients and plant-based elements.
Perth Web Girls
By organising free beginner level coding workshops, Perth Web Girls' goal is to teach women coding skills, create pathways to industry and build communities of like-minded people!
Want to recycle your food scraps? Kooda
is a crowd-sourced organic waste collection service for households. You just collect your kitchen scraps in a bucket and then hit a button to ask someone to come and get it. By doing this, instead of going to landfill, your food scraps are turned into fertiliser for sandy soils.
It's about time someone's eliminating the need for disposable coffee cups! RTRNA is a reusable cup network, which means that we can still get the convenience of a takeaway coffee but without all the guilt.
Many of us have seen their products before, but did you know that Onya Life
is a local Western Australian business? Having been around for over a decade, they're true pioneers in the war on waste with a fantastic range of reusable products.
With many more responsible businesses in Perth, which aim for sustainability and social impact, this won't be the last time we'll publish a post like this.
